    In a significant move towards combating climate change (at least that is what the Left thinks), John Kerry, the special presidential envoy on climate matters, proudly declared on Saturday that the United States is committed to not constructing any new coal plants and eliminating existing ones entirely. This announcement is part of the nation’s ambitious goal to achieve 100 percent carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035, aligning with a coalition of 56 countries dedicated to phasing out coal.

    In a statement released on December 2, Mr. Kerry emphasized the urgency of ending unabated coal use worldwide to bolster economies and foster more resilient communities. He stressed the immediate need to halt the construction of new unabated coal power plants, signaling a critical step towards addressing the climate crisis.

    While the Biden administration has not specified a precise timeline for shutting down existing coal plants, regulatory actions hint at a target year of 2035 for the culmination of coal reliance in the United States. As of October 2023, just under 20 percent of U.S. electricity was generated from coal, according to the Department of Energy (DOE).

    The Power Past Coal Alliance, an anti-coal pact that the United States recently joined, advocates for the cessation of new coal power plant construction and the phasing out of existing plants by 2030 in advanced economies and by 2040 globally. This aligns with the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Net Zero Roadmap, aiming to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C by 2100, as established in the Paris Agreement of 2015.

    Coal-fired plants accounted for 36 percent of global electricity generation in 2022, surpassing all other sources. Notably, over half of this output originated from China, which, despite climate pledges, continued building new coal plants at an alarming pace. The next significant contributors were India, the United States, and Japan, collectively constituting about 25 percent of the global coal-fired electricity share.

    China, the largest consumer of coal, experienced a surge in coal power projects in 2022, contradicting its commitment to reduce coal consumption by the end of the decade. Reports indicate that coal power construction starts and new project announcements in China dramatically increased, with approximately two new coal power plants being permitted per week.

    India, the second-largest consumer, also witnessed a 14 percent rise in coal demand in 2021, as per the IEA’s “Coal 2022” report. Similarly, the United States saw a 15 percent growth in coal demand in 2021, despite its commitment to transitioning away from coal.

    A recent report by Global Energy Monitor (GEM) projected potential job losses in the coal sector, estimating that roughly a million jobs could be lost globally by 2050 as mines retire. The majority of these job losses are anticipated in Asia, particularly in China and India. For the United States, the GEM report predicts the loss of more than 15,000 coal sector jobs per decade in the 2030s and 40s, with fewer than 15,000 jobs expected to be lost in the 2050s.

    As the world collectively grapples with the challenge of transitioning away from coal, the United States’ commitment to phasing out coal and joining global alliances underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing the urgent climate crisis. The path to a sustainable future demands bold initiatives, and the decision to move away from coal is a crucial step towards achieving a carbon-neutral and resilient world.
