In light of the impending expiration of Title 42, El Paso has declared a state of emergency effective from Monday. Local officials estimate that tens of thousands of migrants are awaiting entry into the United States, as the Covid-era border restriction known as Title 42 is scheduled to end next week.

A press release on the official website of the Mexican government indicates that the United States has reaffirmed its commitment to welcome over 100,000 individuals from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador through a family reunification permit program. Additionally, Mexico has agreed to continue accepting the return of a specific number of individuals from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela on “humanitarian grounds.” These individuals were previously being returned to Mexico under Title 42 and are now part of a humanitarian parole program established for these nationalities in January.
