    North Carolina Supreme Court Reinstates Voter ID Law Upsetting Democrats Intent On Using Voter Theft

    It looks like North Carolina is gone for the Democrats. One by one, as states enact voter ID laws, the Democrat party will be destroyed, and they know it. 

    On Friday, the North Carolina Supreme Court handed down several key decisions related to the state’s elections, including the reinstatement of a voter ID law and the retention of Republican-led redistricting maps. The decisions were made possible by a shift in the court’s composition from a Democrat-controlled 4-3 majority to a Republican-led 5-2 majority after the November elections.

    The voter ID law, which was initially enacted in 2018 but was later invalidated over claims that it unfairly targeted minority voters, was reinstated by the court’s Republican majority. In their decision, the majority stated that North Carolinians overwhelmingly support voter identification and other measures that promote greater integrity and confidence in elections. They also noted that subjective tests and judicial sleight of hand have systematically thwarted the will of the people and the legislature. However, they also cautioned that judges exceed their constitutional boundaries when they act as a super-legislature, and that plaintiffs had failed to demonstrate that the law was enacted with discriminatory intent or produced a meaningful disparate impact along racial lines.

    The decision on the redistricting maps was similarly favorable to Republicans, as the court ruled that the state’s constitution did not specify whether the state legislature could or could not make partisan maps. The Republicans on the court argued that the constitution expressly assigns redistricting authority to the General Assembly subject to explicit limitations in the text, which do not address partisan gerrymandering. This ruling could give Republicans an advantage in the 2024 congressional elections in North Carolina, as the Republican supermajority can now draw the maps for the state.

    Both decisions were praised by Republicans and criticized by Democrats, who have long opposed voter ID measures. North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore said that the decisions handed down by the court ensured that the state’s constitution and the will of the people were honored. He also noted that nearly five years after North Carolina voters overwhelmingly voted in favor of photo ID at the polls, it had finally become the law of the land. On the other hand, Democrat State Attorney General Josh Stein called the redistricting decision a “blow to democracy,” stating that the Republican justices had surrendered the constitution’s check on the power of the legislature and given power to an out-of-control gerrymandered Republican supermajority.

    In addition to the two aforementioned decisions, the court also ruled that felons must complete their probation and parole in order to regain their voting rights, reversing a trial court decision. This decision could impact the voting rights of thousands of felons in the state.
