President-elect Donald Trump made it crystal clear on the campaign trail that he’s a massive backer of proposing tariffs, especially on countries like China and other major countries that trade with the United States.
While his tariff plan is generally praised by the Republican Party, many on the other side of the aisle are throwing a fit at the idea, and according to Fox News, House Democrats are already lining up in an attempt to block the incoming president from rolling out his wide-ranging tariff plan.
The bill, which has gained steam on the left in the lower chamber, would essentially block Trump from using his executive powers to make the tariff plan a reality.
Fox reported that the president-elect “promised to levy a 60% tariff on goods from China and as much as 20% on other countries the U.S. trades with.”
What’s going on?
The 47th president is doubling down on his previous ideas regarding tariffs, going as far as to say he’s creating the “External Revenue Service,” which will concentrate on collecting “our Tariffs, Duties, and all Revenue that come from Foreign sources.”
Fox News noted:
Trump and his allies have argued that the plan would bolster American manufacturing while making it more difficult for adversaries like China to “export their way out of their current economic malaise,” as Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent told senators this week.
Trump, or any president, in theory, would have the power to roll out the new tariffs by simply declaring an emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which would allow the executive branch to bypass Congress on the matter.
In a bill led by Reps. Suzan DelBene (D-WA), and Don Beyer (D-VA), with the support of at least 11 other House Dems, Trump would essentially be blocked from taking that approach.
“The American people have clearly and consistently said that the high cost of living is one of their top concerns,” DelBene said in a recent statement. “Not only would widespread tariffs drive up costs at home and likely send our economy into recession, but they would likely lead to significant retaliation, hurting American workers, farmers, and businesses.”
Beyer added, “Trump’s tariff proposals would misuse emergency authorities to raise prices on the American people, which is unacceptable.”
Some Dem support
Not all Democrats are against the idea of imposing tariffs, such as Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, who is considered a moderate and isn’t afraid to break from the party on certain issues.
Golden introduced a bill last week that would impose a 10% tariff on all imports.
“The universal tariff — along with other policies to support domestic energy production, unions and manufacturing — is designed to reorient our economy from one focused on cheap goods and consumption to one centered on production and innovation,” the Maine Democrat said in a statement.
Only time will tell if House Dems muster the support needed to stop Trump, but it doesn’t look like they have much of a shot at doing so.
