According to a report from the local newspaper Heraldo de Aragon, the pilot involved in the incident is a highly experienced wing captain with over 1,000 flight hours. The pilot sustained injuries to the legs, hips, and arms after executing an ejection from the aircraft. The Spanish Air Force has issued a statement confirming the pilot’s transportation to a hospital, assuring that their life is not at risk.
The aircraft crashed within the confines of the base, situated in proximity to a heavily trafficked highway. As per the air force, fragments of the wreckage were scattered outside the base’s perimeter. Upon impact, the aircraft disintegrated completely.
While the exact cause of the crash remains unclear, this recent incident adds to a series of unfortunate accidents involving the Spanish Air Force’s F-18s. In 2017, an F-18 crashed during takeoff at an air base near Madrid, resulting in the pilot’s fatality. Additionally, three non-fatal crashes occurred in 2009, and one in 2003, while six of the American-manufactured jets crashed during the 1990s and 1980s, leading to the loss of two pilots’ lives.
Presently, the Spanish Air Force operates a fleet of 84 F-18s, with purported plans to replace them with the F-35. However, the official stance of Madrid regarding these reports remains unconfirmed.
