How much are all of the Union soldiers’ families owed? They lost a life fighting the Democrats’ and their slavery in the South. Perhaps only Democrats should be forced to pay all reparations since they started the Civil War and owned the slaves. NOT ONE Republican ever owned a slave.
California’s official reparations task force has estimated that black residents of the state are owed up to $1.2 million each in compensation for the legacy of slavery, despite the state entering the Union as a free state in 1850. The task force, which was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2020, released an interim report last year proposing separate black schools and backing reparations, among other proposals. Although the committee narrowly decided that only black residents who could trace their roots to Southern slaves should be eligible for reparations, it has determined that all black residents continue to suffer.

Economists who advised the panel said that their estimate was “conservative,” though it was not a recommendation on the final compensation amount. The estimate includes the damage caused by slavery, as well as “mass incarceration,” housing discrimination, and health risks that are said to be worse among black residents.

California was admitted to the Union as a “free state” in 1850, but slavery continued to be openly practiced for years by white Southerners, who brought enslaved people to the state and forced them to work in gold mines and on plantations. The task force was created to study the history of slavery in California and its enduring inequities for black people.
It is unclear how California would afford to pay the estimated compensation cost of $800 billion, which is several times the size of the annual state budget. The chair of the task force has backed a “wealth tax” to help fund the reparations.

Other reparations panels, such as one in the City of San Francisco, are also at work. The San Francisco task force is considering a proposal to pay each long-term black resident $5 million, though it is unclear where the money for that would come from.
While several jurisdictions have considered and awarded reparations, they are all in states that outlawed slavery. Many hope to set an example for the nation to follow.
