Why is Georgia Senator Bo Hatchett Opposing President Donald Trump?

The following article, Why is Georgia Senator Bo Hatchett Opposing President Donald Trump?, was first published on Big League Politics.

On August 17, 2023, Georgia State Senator Colton Moore launched the process to call for an emergency session of the state legislature to review Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ actions.

In the last two years, Willis’ office carried out an investigation into alleged attempts by former President Donald Trump and his allies to change the results of the 2020 presidential election. This investigation culminated in the indictment of 18 individuals, most prominent of them being Trump and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Moore’s letter has made waves in conservative grassroots circles. However, establishment Republicans in the Georgia legislature have been dragging their feet. For example, Georgia’s House Speaker Jon Burns has criticized attempts to defund Willis’ office claiming that it somehow violates the state constitution’s separation of powers clause.

Senate Republicans have been equally silent on the matter. One Republican who has not signed on to Moore’s letter is Senator Bo Hatchett. On August 21, 2023, Moore posted on X “REPUBLICAN Bo Hatchett is a Georgia Senator. Bo has NOT signed my letter for an emergency session to support investigating DA Fani Willis for targeting President Trump. I encourage the people of Georgia to reach out to Bo and ask him to stand up to the radical left.”

In the case of Hatchett, he told Atlanta-Journal Constitution journalist Greg Bluestein that “what Moore is doing [calling for the special session to investigate Willis] is ‘a horrible abuse of power.’ He’s using the money he steals from conservatives to attack fellow Republicans — doing nothing but helping the Democrats across the state and putting his conservative colleagues in danger.”

On September 2, Moore followed up with another post voicing his frustration with Republicans not making any moves to investigate and defund Willis’ office. He posted:

“Your daily reminder that my effort for an emergency session in Georgia is being BLOCKED by Georgia Republicans. Not Democrats. Not socialists. Not marxists. Nope. It’s the Republican establishment that’s wants us to just sit down and be quiet. No. We must TAKE ACTION… NOW!”

Your daily reminder that my effort for an emergency session in Georgia is being BLOCKED by Georgia Republicans.

    Not Democrats.

    Not socialists.

    Not marxists.

Nope. It’s the Republican establishment that’s wants us to just sit down and be quiet.

No. We must TAKE ACTION… NOW!

    — Sen. Colton Moore (@realColtonMoore) September 2, 2023

Political operative Cliff Maloney has watched the situation unfolding in Georgia like a hawk and has had choice words for establishment Republicans. In a post on X that he published on September 2, he had this to say:

“Georgia Republicans are asleep at the wheel. We must replace every single RINO that ran on defending the rule of law… and is now sitting back and DOING NOTHING while corrupt DAs trample our Bill of Rights. Weak, do-nothing politicians. Thank you for leading @realColtonMoore”

Georgia Republicans are asleep at the wheel.

We must replace every single RINO that ran on defending the rule of law… and is now sitting back and DOING NOTHING while corrupt DAs trample our Bill of Rights

    Weak, do-nothin politicians

Thank you for leading @realColtonMoore https://t.co/n4yPoM62dX

Predictably, after days of inaction in Georgia and other jurisdictions where Republicans have the political power to punish Democrat corruption, Maloney sounded off against Republican inaction:

What in the WORLD is going on with GOP leadership?

DC: REFUSE to impeach Biden, fully fund corrupt DOJ/FBI

Texas: Convened a special session to impeach a statewide elected official… GOP Attorney General Ken Paxton

Georgia: REFUSE to defund the corrupt DA targeting Trump.

    — Cliff Maloney (@CliffMaloneyJr) September 5, 2023

Hatchett first came to office in the Georgia Senate in 2020, after winning the Republican nomination in a runoff election by 37 votes with 50.07% of the total vote. He ended up winning the general election with a whopping 83.18%. During the 2021-2022 session of the General Assembly, Governor Brian Kemp appointed Hatchett to be Kemp’s floor leader.

In 2022, Hatchett won his re-election bid decisively with 84.78% of the vote. He was subsequently reappointed by Governor Kemp to be Kemp’s floor leader for the 2023-2024 session.

By criticizing Moore and refusing to sign his letter, Hatchett is effectively going against former President Trump in a district that handedly went to Trump in 2020.

Hatchett’s case is typical of conservatives in comfy electoral situations, where they receive no credible Democrat challengers nor do they face legitimate threats from their Right. Nevertheless, his behavior should be punished via a credible primary challenger that not only stands for conservative values but is also willing to go to war with the political establishment.

This is the only way for grassroots conservatives in Georgia to have their interests advanced. Colton Moore is one of the few elected officials who is willing to go to war for the grassroots, and for that reason, he should be staunchly supported by conservatives who are serious about realizing political change.

Grassroots conservatives can sign Moore’s official petition to support the investigation of Fani Willis here. They can also donate to Moore to help keep putting pressure on Georgia Republicans here.
